BMW M3 lineage: six generations of M3 in FH5
FH5’s M3 catalogue spans 30 years of Munich’s most iconic compact saloon, from the boxy E30 through to the modern G80:
- 1991 BMW M3 (E30) — Retro Saloons; the original homologation 2.3-litre four-cylinder M3.
- 1997 BMW M3 (E36) — Retro Saloons; 3.2-litre inline-six European-spec.
- 2002 BMW M3-GTR (E46) — Track Toys; the V8 homologation special, famous from Need for Speed and ALMS.
- 2005 BMW M3 (E46) — Retro Saloons; the high-revving S54 inline-six coupe.
- 2008 BMW M3 (E92) — Super Saloons; the V8-powered E92 coupe.
- 2010 BMW M3 GTS (E92) — Track Toys; the 4.4 V8 limited-run track special.
- 2021 BMW M3 Competition Sedan (G80) — Super Saloons; added with the September 2023 Horizon Creatives update.
The M3 G80 was one of the most-requested BMWs in the community and finally arrived more than a year after its M4 sibling. No other game franchise has preserved this breadth of M3 history in a single open-world title. If you want to compare this lineup to what carries forward into the next game, see every BMW in Forza Horizon 6.
M5, M4, M2 and the rest of the M-Division roster
FH5 also carries six M5 generations and the full modern M-Division lineup:
M5 generations
- 1988 BMW M5 (E34) — 3.6 S38 inline-six.
- 1995 BMW M5 (E34) — 3.8 facelift S38.
- 2003 BMW M5 (E39) — the S62 V8.
- 2009 BMW M5 (E60) — the S85 V10.
- 2012 BMW M5 (F10) — twin-turbo S63 V8.
- 2018 BMW M5 (F90) — all-wheel-drive M5.
- 2022 BMW M5 CS (F90) — 626 hp lightweight CS, added in Series 41.
Seven M5s in a single game is unprecedented for the franchise and makes FH5 the most comprehensive M5 archive in any racing game to date. The M5 CS and M8 Competition are both S1-class staples for competitive tuning.
M2 / M4 / M6 / M8
- 2016 BMW M2 Coupé (F87) and 2023 BMW M2 (G87) — the modern compact M.
- 2014 BMW M4 Coupe (F82), 2016 BMW M4 GTS (F82), and 2021 BMW M4 Competition Coupé (G82) — the M4 added in Series 11.
- 2013 BMW M6 Coupe (F13).
- 2020 BMW M8 Competition Coupe (F92) and 2018 BMW #1 M Motorsport M8 GTE — the IMSA/Le Mans GT racer.
Other M cars
- 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe (E82) and 1981 BMW M1 (E26).
- 1986 BMW M635CSi (E24) — the M6’s European predecessor.
BMW SUVs, EVs and oddballs in FH5
Beyond the M coupes and saloons, FH5 carries BMW’s SUVs, EVs and some genuine oddities:
Sports Utility Heroes
- 2011 BMW X5 M (E70) — 4.4 twin-turbo V8 SUV.
- 2011 BMW X5 M Forza Edition — Extreme Track Toys class, an FH5 Forza Edition variant of the X5 M.
- 2015 BMW X6 M (F86) — coupe-style SUV.
- 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 — the brand’s first electric SUV on the list, added September 2023.
Electric and hybrid
- 2015 BMW i8 — Modern Supercars; the carbon-bodied plug-in hybrid sports car.
- 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 — Super Saloons; BMW’s mid-size electric saloon.
- 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 — Sports Utility Heroes.
Three electrified BMWs in FH5 reflects the real-world shift in BMW’s lineup during the game’s active cycle. All three were added post-launch, signalling that the playlist team tracked BMW’s production roadmap closely.
Classics and cult cars
- 1957 BMW Isetta 300 Export — the bubble car, Cult Cars class; the oldest vehicle in BMW’s FH5 lineup by a wide margin.
- 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo (E20) — Classic Sports Cars; the original turbocharged BMW road car.
- 1995 BMW 850CSi (E31) — Retro Sports Cars; the V12 grand tourer added in the Horizon Creatives update.
- 2002 BMW Z3 M Coupe, 2008 BMW Z4 M Coupe, and 2019 BMW Z4 Roadster — the open-top Z lineage.
BMW additions from FH5 updates
BMW has expanded steadily across FH5’s lifecycle. Neither the Hot Wheels (July 2022) nor the Rally Adventure (March 2023) expansion added brand-new BMWs — the headline expansion cars were Hot Wheels concepts and rally machinery from other brands.
The biggest BMW drop came with the Series 26 ‘Horizon Creatives’ update in September 2023, which added five BMWs at once:
“The Forza Horizon 5 garage is growing to include an extra five BMW cars… BMW M3 G80, BMW M2 G87, BMW 850CSi E31, BMW i4 eDrive40 and BMW iX xDrive50.”
These map to the in-game entries 2023 BMW M2, 2021 BMW M3 Competition Sedan, 1995 BMW 850CSi, 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 and 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 respectively. Earlier Festival Playlist updates had previously added the 2021 BMW M4 Competition Coupé (Series 11) and the 2022 BMW M5 CS (Series 41).
As of the March 26, 2026 Backstage update, every previous Festival Playlist-exclusive BMW is available to collect directly from the Backstage Shop. There is no longer any BMW on the official roster that requires an active playlist or timed event to unlock.
